The end of the year is in sight, and there is a lot of fun coming our way.
April brings several new initiatives and fun activities for the FRES/LCS community. Get involved with School Board decisions and fun volunteer opportunities in the next few weeks.
School Lunch Review
Mark your calendars for two important topics under discussion at the next School Board meeting, April 17 at 6:30 pm in the FRES library. First up is a review of the School Lunch Program, which has been losing money due to low participation rates. The Wilton/Lyndeborough School Board is looking for input from students and families about why they are choosing not to buy school lunch. A survey went out 4/12, but it can also be found here.
A second item on the School Board agenda is considering an in-house after school program provided by the Y or other organization. This topic will also be up for discussion at the next School Board meeting.
Also starting this month, state testing begins for our third, fourth, and fifth graders. Please encourage your children to sleep well, eat a good breakfast, and do their best on the tests. We appreciate your support and the students’ hard work. We will be thanking the students with freshly popped popcorn Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of the week of April 16. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to help out!
Artist in Residence
The PTO was pleased to provide additional funding for the FRES Artist In Residence program, which is running this month. Students spent a week working with Shana Brautigam, a potter who uses ancient firing techniques to finish her work. She will return on April 20 to help students finish their work.
Reading, Reading Reading!
We enjoyed a great presentation about the new reading program begun this year at FRES and LCS. Teachers Heather Desmarais and Kristen Hebert gave us some valuable insight about how the program works, and how the students are responding to it. The short version? Kids love it, so teachers love it too. Next year, FRES and LCS will start using the parallel writing program (Writer’s Workshop) to complement the reading work.
Our LCS Readathon started April 9 and continues through April 20. All of the donations we receive will be used to purchase books for LCS students, teachers, and classrooms. Consider making a donation on our Readathon fundraising page. The money raised helps us provide vouchers for students to purchase books at the LCS Book Fair May 9-11.
There are plenty of volunteer opportunities coming this spring. Signups are posted on Signup Genius, or be in touch with us to get involved.
Staff Appreciation Week (April 30-May 4) Help us thank our teachers, administrators, and staff for all of their hard work with breakfast and lunch for Staff Appreciation Week. Sign up to bring a breakfast or lunch dish here.
Basket Raffle & Thank You Supper (May 17) Our annual PTO basket raffle is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Featuring donations from local businesses, artists, and craftspeople, our baskets celebrate our community and all it has to offer. Donations should be given to Ariel Crotty by 4/30. Enjoy a complimentary Thank You Pasta Dinner in the FRES Cafeteria during the event. The PTO board is pleased to be able to offer a special dinner featuring pasta and all the trimmings as our thanks for all of your support throughout the year. This dinner is open to everyone, so come and enjoy!
Field Day (June 15) A fun FRES tradition returns. This year’s theme kicks off Summer Reading with a selection of stations inspired by some favorite books. (Think Muggle Quiddich and Pippi Longstocking’s Long-Shoe Races.) We’ll be needing plenty of volunteers, so watch for signups coming soon.
